Google Tech Talks March 6, 2007 ABSTRACT Jeff “Yak” Minter has been developing video games from the Sinclair Spectrum era on up through the present day. If you were alive in the 8-bit years, you’ve probably played one of his games: Llamatron, Attack of the Mutant Camels, Gridrunner and Idris Alpha were among the better-known ones. If you were one of the 30 people to buy an Atari Jaguar, you probably bought his “Tempest 2000″ and “Defender 2000″ cartridges. And if you own an Xbox 360, you’ve also seen his work: the builtin music visualizer is his creation. His current project is an xbox Live Arcade game temporarily titled “Space Giraffe”, which is an attempt to bring the classic Atari game Tempest…

Currently on sale on Steam for $2! (or a pack of games for $10). Gotta get this :O
Wonderful. It’s been two years since I played Space Giraffe, but I can still understand it. I know exactly what was going on, even in Flumm Ox. There’s something about that game… Watching it again made me feel… warm. I really need to get my 360 fixed. The one game I miss playing the most, is Space Giraffe. Screw Halo and Burnout and Assassin’s Creed. They’re good games, I will replay them when I can, but most of all I want my giraffe back!
I could buy it off Steam, of course… hm…
While the games are great, but I still can’t believe Llamasoft has only about 5 buyable games after they have been founded 28 years ago.
great show this. so good to see jeff who influenced the industry so much at the time. though his games were wierd, they were streets ahead in playablilty and stretched the machine so much compared to other software authors
What is his obsession with bulls and sheep?
It sounds like he sampled part of a KLF song(MU MU) in space giraffe
I love hearing about a successful hippy!! Go Yak!
Couldnt see the enimies because of the background? Say again, Mr. Minter?
0:19:13 ftw. Jeff Minter ftw
Also: LOL @ “Piss off, Dell Support!”
Man oh man. Great games here.
Rating #100!
Perfect score, new highscore achieved!
Funny thing, I can understand everything being said hear. Bit of a mouthbreather which doesn’t surprise me though
“Look, whatever you do, y’know if you’re gonna design the graphics for my game, whatever you do don’t make it so you design the… you have the backgrounds and then you can’t see the enemies in front of the backgrounds, because that really ruins the game.” O_o
I love Jeff Minter’s work, from the early 80’s up to the Xbox360.
Great work, love your visualizer stuff . . .
Does anyone have that Jaguar visualizer rom?
great video, jeff minter is a great programmer.
As much as I like Minter and his games (I had most of em on the Vic and c64) he really needs to accept that indie gaming is at a whole new level and in particular modding FPS games pretty much rule the roost in the indie PC arena.
Never-ending variants of tempest and defender just don’t cut it.
Perhaps time to retire?
LOL the score readout is a simulation of Nixie tubes! (look it up)
he is a genius!
i could not agree more with minter on his game design evolution ideas.
Jeff is a genius, I really hope he’ll release more of his fantastic games on Xbox Live Arcade!
This is my favourite Xbox 360 game (I’m in the 30s in the high score table) and I love it. More, more, more! And charge more for it this time
lol.bosses get right on mt tits
minter rules.
Oops, sorry, I was signed in on my housemates login for that last post! hehehe.. I used to also see Jeff at the numerous PC shows, there with his bare feet and mum tagging along
Such a great character, it’s a shame he seems to be so shunned by the big corporate bastards nowadays tho
Unfortunately not, am sure it would’ve been worth a few bob one day tho :
